FPCUP Summer-Schools and Workshops for Cultural Heritage

Three workshops over the summer introduced end-users, researchers and students from the field of Cultural Heritage to Copernicus and satellite data.

Three workshops took place in 2023 in Italy, Germany and Cyprus. The workshop in Italy took place in Rome from 13- 16 June, 2023, in Germany it took place in Oberpfaffenhofen from 3-6 July, 2023 and in Cyprus it took place in Limassol from 31 October to 3 November 2023. Each five-day workshop was designed for local participants, including local/regional experts, archaeologists and decision makers, government agencies, local authorities, private companies, industry, academia, researchers and graduate and doctorate level students, in order to provide in-depth training on how to use Copernicus data for cultural heritage.

Invited experts in the field of Cultural Heritage and Earth observation who provided knowledge transfer and capacity building on how Copernicus data can be used for cultural heritage taught the workshops. The workshops included lectures and presentations as well as in-situ activities that utilize easy-to-use, web-based, remote-sensing software. The workshops included two days visits to cultural heritage sites and laboratory exercises in order to develop the necessary knowledge and skills for using Copernicus data for cultural heritage applications. The lecture material and relevant case studies were developed by experts in the field of Cultural Heritage and Earth observation.

The main achievements are:

  • Nearly 300 participants from the Cultural Heritage Sector attended the Summer-Schools in Rome (Italy), Oberpfaffenhofen (Germany) and Limassol (Cyprus). Beneath presentations and posters also workshops on the utilization of Earth Observation (EO) data and Copernicus services and interchange between users and EO specialists gave new insights and ideas for using EO data in Cultural Heritage.
