The success of Polish students

Innovative ideas of Polish students in the use of satellite data of the Copernicus Programme

The second edition of the Hackathon, called "HackVision", kicked off in November 2022 with a total of more than 30 teams from eight cities.

During the preliminaries at regional level, we in effect selected 7 teams to enter the final competition. At the regional stage, each team presented an outline of their concept, ideas for solving local problems, which we had previously analysed on the basis of National Intelligent Specialisations, which fit the specifics of each region.

Then, representatives of the IGiK, companies (Absiskey and Orbify), and representatives from local business choose the 8 final teams. In the next stage, we worked with each group individually to develop the best results from the projects. Then we organised a conference with the participation of 7 teams (one team from Zielona Góra withdrew its project, for organisational reasons they could not ensure continuity in the project).

During the conference organized at the Brain Embassy in Warsaw, the final solutions, which included a description of the project, development plan and budget, were presented in a stationary and online form.

The winners received the main prize - a trip to the Space Center in Toulouse - Cité de l'espace, and a visit to the Airbus Museum.

The summary of the trip was a meeting with Philipp Lattes, who works for Aerospace Valley, cooperates with companies, startups, is generally the owner of extraordinary resources of knowledge about companies in various countries.

The main achievements are:

  • increasing awareness of satellite data,
  • engagement and building relationships between decision makers, local authority, and students,
  • promotion of the Copernicus program,
  • creating new ideas, applications using satellite data
  • reports and communication Hackathons in different Universities and in different regions of Poland – in the end we got 8 cities on our list
  • challenges solutions summary – we’ve got 8 report solution as a presentation
