The numerical modelling of ocean circulation is a very young discipline that was developed mostly during the second half of the 20th century, benefiting greatly from the simultaneous technological progress and the development of numerical methods especially in the field of meteorology and weather prediction. In fact, the equations that describe the behaviour of the ocean and the atmosphere are very similar.
