Peatlands play a vital role in regulating greenhouse gases and sustaining biodiversity worldwide. An estimated 80% of the UK’s peatlands are in poor condition, calling for extensive restoration effort.

JNCC partnered with Forest Research, Natural England and the Welsh Government to demonstrate how Sentinel-2 data can support peatland condition monitoring. This novel approach has produced annual maps of predicted bare peat cover and maps of the estimated change over time during the time period using time-series modelling, informed by VHR data, were applied to sites across the UK. These maps can be used to monitor changes to condition over time, target management efforts, and inform us of how effective restoration measures have been.
